New Haven Museum

The New Haven Museum is a Colonial Revival-style building that contains many New Haven artifacts, including a portrait of Joseph Cinque, the leader of the Africans who revolted on the Amistad. The portrait of Cinque was painted by New Haven artist Nathaniel Jocelyn (1796-1881) in 1840 and is found in “The Amistad Gallery,” as part of an on-going exhibition. Also found in this gallery are documents from the trial, including letters from John Quincy Adams and the Amistad captives.
